He hadn't expected to be jumping. "Fuck me." He growls, following her as their pursuers barreled through the thinning smoke in their wake. Landing with a thud, he stumbled forward and nearly snapped a railing in half due to a combination of rotted wood and his prodigious weight. "Fuck me!" He shouts, momentarily surprised before he rights himself.

Just in time for falling debris to drift past from the hailstorm of gunfire above them.

Foul work takes a foul mouth to swallow; Kasai’d never met a grunt who couldn’t swear her six ways from Sunday, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Still, her jaw remained set as she backed up and took aim with her rifle. The lot above got caught flatfooted by Talith and Koenig – two went down immediately, the others twisted around in a panic for cover.

Between a rock and a hard place (anyone’s guess which one of those was Hernandez, though). She opened fire.

Quick and dirty does it, and then they’d get out before reinforcements bogged them down in this dump.

Quick and dirty were what he preferred, but not always what he was given. Opening fire with her, he waited for her to pause to reload before stepping into the hallway, gun up. Sliding into the first open doorway he could, he leaned out and fired a potshot down the hall at a goon sticking his head out.

The simulated soldier ducked back into cover, and he waved Kasai forward with a brief flick of his hand. "Fuckin' pricks need to be bodied." He mutters to himself.

Her only reply was the rapport of her rifle as she stepped up to fill his void. With a new mag in place – no fancy armor-integrated machine guns here – Kasai made quick work of the first guy.

After he crumpled to the floor, the Corporal rushed to press her back against the nearest wall. A few bursts of fire rang out further down the corridor. Muzzle flash blossomed in the smoke – once, twice. Two bodies hit the ground with a heavy thud.

A beat of silence, then, “All clear, ma’am!”

Kasai exhaled the tension in her shoulders. “Good work. All in one piece?” The men nodded. Apart from a slowly leaking graze on Talith’s cheek, they both seemed fine.

“Alright, let’s get out of here. This shit ain’t defensible.”

"One piece." He retorts gruffly. "It feels like my bones are grinding together." This was beginning to become a struggle for the mountain on legs, but that wasn't surprising. He had more mass than a Catholic church. His ammo count was still good for the moment, so he didn't reload, and instead stepped out into the hallway to join the others.

"It's defensible." He adds, "But only if we had a flamethrower and about four more men."

“Gotta slim down, Private.” She grinned, harsh and wide, and led them down the stairs.

“Say what – we beat Sgt. Kapoor’s time, and I’ll load us that fucking flamethrower next sim.” With that, she motioned with her hand, and they swept into the next floor. One by one they cleared their way down – fuck that alternating stairwell design – until finally a dead alley met them at the back door.

Her eyes flickered over the buzzing signs above and the pools of oil and piss below. Lovely.

    “Let’s move.”

He didn't want to know Sergeant Kapoor's time, if only because it would distract him while they worked. "I do enjoy a good roast." He admits, following her down and to the next floor. They could go out any of the ground floor doors and they would be fine. It was still a fairly easy simulation, which meant this wasn't a suicidal last stand scenario.

No one won in a last stand.

"I've got your six." He rumbles, keeping to her tail and sweeping into the alley in her wake, gun up. Grunting, he realized they'd need to head back inside unless they found another way out. "We could try another window."

Kasai made a face. “Because that shit’s so quiet.”

He had a point, though. Annoying. “Just— use some fabric this time, yeah?” Scowling, she waved the squad back inside. There were some balconies on the second floor, close enough to the other building to jump over.

    Probably.

"What shit?" He asks, apparently on a different train of thought than her. Leading the way back inside, he inspected a few rooms and ultimately, they decided that a balcony to the next door building would be best.

He wasn't sold on the idea, but it was the plan. "Best bet will be crossing, and then leaving out a side door somewhere." At that, he slid open the balcony door and climbed onto the rail to jump over. Landing with a thud and the crunch of broken glass under his boots, he stepped through the shattered balcony door and went inside, weapon at the low ready.

He dutifully checked his corners, then waved them out into the hall after pointing out the nearest stairwell.

The glass crunched under her combat boots as she jumped over. Koenig and Talith followed on their heels as she cleared downstairs with Hernandez.

Another door; another alley. Still quiet, still nobody on their asses. Kasai dragged a breath over her teeth and ordered the team to cross in staggered formation. The sim wasn’t over yet.

So where the fuck were they?

They had to clear the alley and get to... wherever their objective was. Ordered to cross the street, Hernandez took point, darting out into the open and across the way before gunfire erupted. A shot hit him in his leg, and he tumbled to the ground as his armor locked up and sent him facedown onto the street.

Grunting, he realized he was closer to the far side than the near one, and he began dragging himself towards cover as simulated bullets kicked up clouds of debris where they ricocheted from the ground.

“Fuck. Koenig, cover him.” The man began laying down fire while Kasai and Talith sprinted from the alley to a parked car.

More bullets; shouting. The Corporal breathed expletives.

With the shitty lighting and wet asphalt, the flash of gunmetal looked the same as the flash of a trashcan.

“Talith, you’re up.” As he sprung up to allow Koenig an opening, Kasai darted forward along the rows of cars. Sneak close enough, and she could smoke them out with a grenade.

But first – “You gonna die on me, Hernandez?”

Craning his head, he grunted, heaving himself over the wet asphalt with steady insistence. He had to, because he took a bullet to the other leg, numbing it as well. Thankfully, she hadn't dialed the difficulty up to 'realistic,' so he wasn't being subjected to extreme bouts of simulated pain that would likely have rendered him unconscious.

Pulling himself into the shadow of a crumbling stairwell, he adjusted the set of his rifle across his lap, eyeing their six and seeing nothing for the time being. Wincing as he adjusted his hips, using a palm to resettle his weight, he snorts. "I'm not being paid to die." He retorts.

Spoken like a true marine. Hard fucker.

Redoubling her determination, Kasai slunk forward, back snug to the cold metal of the still vehicles. The flicker of advertisements on the buildings above them covered the shadow of her approach; the echoing gunfire, her steps.

In what felt like one breath and a hundred, she’d crawled close enough. A quick glance over the hood of a car to take stock of the enemy positions.

The grenade went flying over a moment later. Kasai readied her rifle.

As best he could, he'd take a few potshots down the road towards the enemy, trying to provide a bit of covering fire. While it worked somewhat - at first - before long the stonework he rested against began to erupt small puffs of mortar and brick where bullets impacted. Grunting, he settled in, quietly fuming.

This was a fight. He should be in it. But now he was a cripple.

So he stared down the road behind them, doing his best to maintain trigger discipline instead of just opening fire on the nearest car in anger.

Didn’t last much longer after that. The grenade blew a couple up. The rest of them ran for cover; Koenig and Talith picked them off like flies.

Kasai licked her lips, swung the rifle to her side in its sling. “Alright, check them out. I’m gonna—” she gestured towards Hernandez and broke off in a jog.

“How bad?” She offered the hand, like the words, without judgment.

She'd find him where he sat, which still kept him pretty even with her in height, hilariously enough. He took the hand, but she'd really have to pull to get him up, if only because his legs didn't seem to want to support him. "Blackout drunk." He replies, "Can't move my legs, really. It's like I did four leg days in two hours and my legs decided I was too much of an asshole for them to support."

She clicked her tongue. “Sucks to be you, Hernandez.”

A couple of all-clears sounded from behind them. Kasai tilted her head aside, lips curled into a half-smirk.

“Well— you’re useless now. Might as well.” She patted his shoulder and called out the exit sequence.

"Yeah, yeah. Sucks to be the big guy - keeps hitting his head on the ceiling." Rolling his eyes, he leaned back against the stairway until she started up the exit sequence. Grunting as he was able to move his legs again, he disconnected himself from the simulation and stood himself up, stretching himself with an audible groan.

"Fuck me. Not making fun of cripples ever again. That blew worse than the freebies in the sump."

Kasai needed a minute. (She always did.)

Instead she unclipped the belts and stepped out of the sim chair. Groggy. Mouth like the deserts of Mars.

    Yep. Sounds about right.

She wiped the sweat of her brow; shook out her limbs. “The whores back in Innis still blow the worst.” Her green gaze slid over to the datascreen on the far wall. She arched an eyebrow. “And we… don’t. Congrats, losers. Y’all’ve earned yourselves a flamethrower.”

She paused. Glanced at her watch. “And lunch, apparently.”
