Mariko could hear the both of them out in the hallway, from her hiding spot behind the cabinet. Evan's voice was the one that mattered most. Sophie was a factor, but she wasn't a threat. Why was everyone trying to kill her all of the sudden? And why did literally every person on the planet except for her have a gun?

She risked a quick glance around the corner but the end of the cabinet exploded in torrent of splintered plastic, a few jagged pieces embedding themselves into her cheek, just below her right eye.

A sharp yelp escaped her and she ducked back around the corner to relative safety.

"I uh... Yeah, we should leave! Anyone have any bright ideas?" She shouted through gritted teeth, holding a hand to the new wound. Already blood was pooling over her fingers.

The officer that Marianne had shot was only a few feet away from her and he had a shield strapped to his back. There was no way for her to know if it could stop high powered rounds, and she doubted that it would, but it was something.

    "We'll come to you!"
She raised her voice once more and looked to Marianne, signaling towards the fallen officer and mouthed the word 'ready?' to her.

    "Mon Dieu!"

Marianne gawked at Mariko. Her face was gashed and bloody. It streamed through her fingers. "Stay low!" she snapped, expecting more high velocity rounds to come in. "Iz dis really 'appening?!" she moaned, she'd turned her back on incidents like this. "We will?" she echoed Mariko's words, showing she was doubting her sanity.

She shook her head, beginning a No- but the other woman was already going for it. A wailing Marie scrambled after her.

Evan inhaled largely, holding the air in his chest. Fight through it. Now's not the time to whimper. He braced himself, rolling from his back onto his hands and knees. He wanted to scream, but was determined enough to keep going. With a crawl, he rejoined the others in the hallway, once they retreated from the apartment. Evan let out his breath with a reddened face. Leaning against the wall, he slowly rose to his feet.

Once he scanned the hallway, he saw that the three officers there were still down; perhaps fatally. His eyes drifted back to focus on Mariko. She had a new series of injuries. Wincing, he spoke with a cracked voice. "I'm sorry. I'm rubbish at this." It was the second time he left her alone since the conspiracy they were all caught up in began, and the second time misfortune fell on her when he was not there to help. It was a wonder she did not hate him and left without a word.

Evan's breath came ragged, and he alternated methods of breathing until he decided on the one which hurt the least. He bent at the knees to retrieve a handgun from one of the SWAT members, checking the clip before thumbing the safety. He sincerely hoped he would not have to use it. The guilt he felt from failing to protect Mariko was compounded by the fact that he, Sophie, and now Marianne had used lethal force against a group of police that were just doing their jobs.

Sophie watched Evan limp to the doorway. That answered that question - he was foot-mobile. She waited for the tenth shot and fired through the shattered window, putting six shots downrange in a wide grouping.

An eleventh shot came through close enough that the shockwave hurt her ears. She made a note to include some foam earplugs in her bag next time and dodged down, scooping up her hand terminal and coming back up to fire the rest of her magazine.

    They're using twenty-round magazines, then.

Sophie fired until the last round, then dropped the empty magazine in a speed reload. She scrambled over to the others and briefly considered taking one of the carbines, but it would be just that much harder to hide. She did, however, liberate some more ammunition and a pair of flashbang grenades from a groaning SWAT trooper. Feeling an unusual flash of guilt, she rolled her onto her side and checked her airway before getting up again.

"I know where we can go, but it's a long way on foot. We'll need to find a quiet place to look at Evan first."

While Sophie had opened fire on the sniper, drawing his fire, Mariko snatched up the shield from the fallen officer and grabbed Marianne's arm with her free hand to drag the french woman along with her. Once they were in the relative safety of the hallway, Mariko handed the shield to Marianne and smiled apologetically to Evan. He was considerably more hurt than she was, and it was entirely her fault. Though as to why that was, she still didn't know.

They needed to find a properly safe place where she could dig through the binder, in hopes of finding more information. Perhaps digging through the email message that she had received as well would help, but she couldn't figure anything out while they were being shot at.

Carefully, she knelt down by the door and clicked her tongue in an effort to get Canelé to venture out from beneath the relative safety of the couch -- but the cat stubbornly refused to move. Cursing under her breath, she crawled into the living room, which was dangerous in-and-of itself, to grab the yowling feline by the scruff of her neck and dragged her out of hiding.

A few moments later, she returned with the cat wrapped in her jacket to keep her from clawing her way free once again.

"Okay... whoever you are." She hissed to the woman, looking to Evan with an expression that seemed to read 'who the hell is this'. Canelé writhed in her grasp, but she grabbed the cat by the scruff again to keep her still while her other arm held her firmly against her chest.

"We don't have time to find a quiet place. What if we took a car?"

Sophie let the Mariko's look slide off her. At this point all she wanted was to sort everything out and then find a quiet corner so she could break down alone.

"A car could work. It would have to be quiet, though. If they realise we've taken a vehicle, it'll be easy to track us and get ahead. Come on, we can discuss on the way down."

Sophie headed down the hallway and scanned the stairs briefly, then descended as fast as she could. There wasn't much time.

Marianne shared Mariko's suspicions. Both of them had their hackles up and the ire was directed squarely at Sophie though poor Evan was also caught in the crossfire. Her finger still danced far too close to the trigger for anyone's comfort. She was muttering to herself in a smooth stream of swearing that encompassed French, Berber, and Maghrebi.

She began to pad some of the pockets done for something worth looting. She thumped one of the 'bodies' that groaned too much. Grabbing whatever she could, she vaulted to her feet with her rucksack, taking the steps three at a time.

Evan did his best to keep pace with his partners in crime. Holding his side, he kept moving with a mixture of stubbornness and sheer force of will. "Mariko's right. There's no time to stop. I'll be fine," he said through gritted teeth. Now that he was moving, it felt like the truth. Each step was easier than the last, though he knew the adrenaline was still helping to numb the full extent of the pain. In a few hours time, he would be down for the count, and that was not including any further injuries that could result from him acting so recklessly with broken ribs.

He held a white-knuckled grip on the pistol he recovered, keeping his attention focused on following Sophie's lead. Mariko and Marianne were a few steps ahead, with Evan bringing up the rear. He had no idea where Sophie was taking them, but it had to be better than here. It was safe to say she was truly on their side -- her actions in the past ten minutes convinced him of that well enough.

It almost brought an amused smirk to his face when he thought about Mariko, and especially Marianne, verbally tearing into Sophie when they arrived wherever they were going. In a way, the SWAT team was easier to handle. Even worse still was Mariko's condition, both physical and mental. Once they had a chance to breathe, if they ever would again, he needed to give her a proper apology, and his word that he would do better by her going forward. Thus far, it had been quite the pile-up of clusterfucks.

When they emerged outside the apartment building, Evan did his best to hold a normal composure while he concealed his firearm. The sirens grew ever nearer.

Mariko hung back and walked along side Evan, holding the cat close to her chest. She was still barefoot, bruised and had blood running down her face. It was needless to say that she would stand out now that they were in the open. He was struggling and in pain, that much was obvious.

She reached over with one hand and held Canelé in her other arm, gently squeezing his shoulder. "We'll be okay, Evan." She murmured to him, forcing a strained smile.

It had been a long day for the both of them. All she wanted to do was collapse onto the floor and go to sleep. Preferably while being drunk.

Sophie took them downstairs, thinking hard about what to do. She composed a teary, confused story about being caught up in the gunfight and chose a high wittering voice that would get them into an ambulance - but an emergency vehicle would be noticed as missing quickly, and tracked even more easily. They needed a private vehicle.

At the second floor, she noticed a sign and motioned them over to a connection into a parking facility next door. It was high-grade, stacking cars vertical in a fully-mechanised system. She spotted motion ahead and assembled as much of a plan as she could in that moment. The Norwegian girl darted back to Evans' good side and hooked his arm over her, grabbing her hand terminal and picking a fake ID.

A cluster of civilians had holed up in the corridor; a barricade of desks and furniture barred the glass doors. Sophie knocked on the door with one hand, waving her hand terminal at the motley collection of residents. A man in an expensive-looking suit tried to wave her away. She picked nurse to match his expectations, then chose French with an American accent.

"Je suis infirmière à l'AP-HP - l'hôpital universitaire, je dois amener cet homme à l'hôpital mais ils ne nous laisseront pas passer la porte d'entrée!"

I'm a nurse at the AP-HP - the university hospital. I need to get this man there but they won't let us through the front door!

The man looked at her oddly, then responded in New York-accented English.

"The police told us not to let anyone in, or to use the garage system!"

Businessman? She picked a slower American accent, something low-city, to let him feel superior. A stammer and a touch of hysteria to trigger some protective instincts.

"He's bleeding out. T-There's a bullet inside. I don't know what to do!"

Marianne followed, very much on edge. Two years out of trouble, three years nearly since she'd had guns going off around her with her amidst it. Part of her just wanted to leap out a window and take her own chances, abandon the walking wounded, head for the slums, and just wait for it all to blow over. But a bloodied and barefoot Mariko stopped her.

Her own attempt at looking woebegone wouldn't pass muster. Marie's expression was enough to curdle milk. She tucked the handgun in her waistband letting her top rest over it for concealment. Wincing at Sophie's accent, she focused at keeping her mouth shut so as to not sabotage any attempt at escape. Another grimace as the American spoke up. Bad enough she shared with a Canadien!

"Ah am going to put a bullet in 'is skull if 'e keeps bleating" she swore in a quiet voice, too low for those on the other side of the door to hear.

Evan grunted at Mariko's encouragement; not in a disapproving manner, but rather, because it hurt to speak. He attempted to reassure her with a weak smile. Seeing her scratched, bruised, and exhausted pained him. He placed a hand on her back, between her shoulder blades, as if he could transmit his thoughts by touch. I know we will, or I'll die trying.

It was then that Sophie appeared at Evan's side, hooking his arm over her shoulder. She hurried him over to what appeared to be a parking garage, and attempted to negotiate with some people that had locked themselves inside. "Oh," was all he managed to utter when he realized this must have been part of Sophie's exit strategy, and he put on the role of a gunshot victim; not too much of a stretch for Evan at that point.

Hanging his head down and closing his eyes, then sensation to sleep wrapped Evan like a warm blanket, and he started to go slack against Sophie. His stamina poured out of him like a faucet.

Sophie felt Evan sag against her, which was a bad sign. She was a terrible shot one-handed, even without holding deadweight. Evan had to have at least twenty, maybe thirty kilos on her.

She pulled him closer and higher, no longer needing to pretend very much to have an injured man with her. Preparing to ratchet up the pressure, she drew breath to speak but was beaten to it by an elderly Parisian woman wearing - somewhat incongruously - a dove-grey floor-length ball gown. Her accent was pure upper-class English.

"Let them go, Jules. Please, do they look dangerous to you?"

He scowled but bent to shift a desk from one of the doors, easing it open enough that they could squeeze through sideways. Sophie semi-deliberately squeaked a little at the strain of pushing Evan through, but it wasn't entirely faked. He really was quite heavy.

"Stay with me. We're going to get out of here, okay? Madame, can we borrow your car?"

"It's not mine, my dear. Jules was going to take me to the opera - Jules, please help these poor dears. The police won't let us out for a while anyway, ce n'est pas?"

Jules passed her a set of keys, still scowling. He looked like he was going to say something, but decided against it at the last moment. Sophie pocketed them without comment and hit the system, which brought out a sleek black executive-styled vehicle with tinted windows.

    Perfect.

Their luck didn't hold. Sophie took manual control and kept the revs high as they rolled towards the exit, preparing a sharp turn towards the industrial northern side.

A police officer stepped out into their path, waving at them to stop. A weapon hung on a sling, but they were wearing a regular stab vest rather than full SWAT armour. Sophie slowed them, then held the engine with the clutch as they came to a halt. She rolled the window down.

"You can't be leaving here. I need you to step out of the vehicle and come with me-"

Later, there would be much argument whether it was Sophie or the policeman who reached for their weapon first. Either way, the Naval Intelligence agent followed her training perfectly: drawing her weapon at speed, keeping her elbows crooked and tapping the trigger twice. The policeman didn't stand a chance, and Sophie didn't give him one. Chest shot, head shot. He toppled backwards; she kept the weapon in her lap.

She waited two seconds in case he had a partner, but clearly they didn't have enough manpower to establish full patrols across the perimeter yet. She gunned the engine, jumped them straight into second gear and pulled away.

Silence filled the van as the blonde woman, Sophie, drove them to an unknown location. Where the hell Evan had found her, she had no idea, and she was convinced that she didn't actually want to know.

Her stomach twisted with revulsion as the woman so effortlessly killed the officer that had tried to intervene. That had been an innocent man, just doing his job and she had gunned him down. It was unnecessary, and immediately put the already rattled Mariko more on edge. She felt as if the nerves of her body were exposed to open air, even just the slightest jostle felt as if she was about to snap.

Tittering on the brink of a nervous breakdown, Mariko buried her face into the fluffy orange tabby that she was cradling in her arms and squeezed her eyes shut. She didn't want to think about any of this anymore.

They just needed to get some where safe, where Evan's injuries could heal (and her own, but she didn't give those much consideration), and where they could lay low until they figured out their next move.

All she could do now, was hope that the murderess in the van didn't decide to hand them over to the authorities.

Evan teetered on the brink of consciousness, slumped into his seat as Sophie played get-away driver. Just as his vision would go dark and his mind blank, the vehicle would maneuver sharply, and Evan was thrust back into a weak alertness that would quickly dissipate. The sensation of the vehicle coming to a halt caused Evan to crack open his eyes and look at his fellow accomplices weakly, just before the sound of gunfire fully snapped him awake. He was not entirely aware of what had happened, but he could figure that Sophie shot someone, as she did not appear to be wounded.

"What the hell was that?!" he croaked, not sure if his voice was very audible. His torso was still in an extreme amount of pain, but he seemed to have snapped out of passing in-and-out, thankfully. As Sophie gunned the engine, he was thrown back into his seat, eyes wide in alarm and confusion. He turned as best he could to look over his shoulder at Mariko and Marianne in the back. The former had her face buried in Canele, and through all the various hurts he felt, that one hurt the most. What have we gotten ourselves into? I'm sorry, Mariko.

"Sophie. Report," Evan winced as he slipped back into an irritable professionalism. His priority was the safety of Mariko and Marianne, even if that included being at odds with Devereaux's former lover.

Sophie merged them into traffic, her eyes alternating between the road and the sky. Not that it was likely that she'd see a Big Eye drone if one was flying above them, but it was the principle of the thing. She pointedly ignored the two women in the back, and only replied to Evan at length.

"I neutralised a threat. We are on our way to a secure safehouse where we can hide until I can find a transport for the transfer to orbit."

She stepped on the accelerator to get them through a changing signal, then turned them onto the fast lane heading for the spaceport. She felt distant, like someone else was doing the driving and speaking while she concentrated on feeling... nothing at all.

"That's a pretty way of saying that you shot and killed a man." Mariko growled from the back seat, turning her gaze out the window to stare at the traffic and buildings flashing by as Sophie aggressively maneuvered the vehicle through the busy streets.

Whoever Sophie was, Mariko didn't trust the woman as far as she could throw her. Which she highly doubted would be very far, if at all.

Instead, she leaned forward and reached out to Evan with her right hand, holding Canelé with the left, and gently squeezed his shoulder. "How are you holding up?" She asked him softly.

"I suppose it is. I couldn't very well let him use his radio and let them know about our vehicle."

Sophie could have said more - about Centre Axis Relock and the difficulty of firing from within a vehicle, about 240-grain police-issue hollow-points and cera-bonded body armour. But then she saw Mariko reach for Evan's shoulder and suddenly, well, what was the point?

They were approaching the edge of the city when Sophie cut across to an exit, leaving the bustling freeway for a large industrial estate. It was starting to become late, and the colours of sunset tinged the sky.

Marianne was suspicious to say the least. Everything about the woman screamed officialdom but then she'd shot a French police officer without any hesitation. For a moment she moved the semiautomatic under her jacket, debating putting a bullet in the blonde's head. Sanity prevailed. A car crash would jsut draw more attention to them and there was no guarantee they'd survive it.

"Away from you damnable feline" she muttered as Canele tried to nuzzle her arm. Marianne did her best to get settled in the car, allowing the weariness she'd kept at bay roll over her. She drifted off into an uneasy snooze, jerking awake for a moment everytime the car hit a bump or her head tilted forward too much.
