"And dat is one of twenty," Bodhi declared. He stepped back from the table and crossed his arms over his chest. His raised one eyebrow and looked down at the Star Helix riot vest he had just dumped on the table and waited to see what Lukas had to say.

He hadn't given the man much of a hint as to why he wanted to see him. He would have done so earlier but as far as the OPA were concerned some stolen armour on the Protogen security guards on Thoth was of much less interest than the data they were busy stripping out of the equipment they had taken from the spin station.

No matter how many times he came to this bar, he considered the name to be particularly stupid. Last time, he had brought along a young detective who had helped him with the interrogation of a suspect regarding the location of the armor. That went well enough. Following that, Luka had met with Bodhi to sort out some facial recognition business, in reference to some of those potentially sent to Eros for work, but that was a failure before it even started.

Luka suspected that a certain Lieutenant Jason Bartle, conspiring with Senior Detective Sikes, had betrayed him and set out a gang of belters to assassinate him, Bodhi, and the facial recognition specialist that was brought along to shoulder the work. The specialist was killed, Bodhi was shot in the leg, and thanks to the swat armor that Luka had brought along, he suffered nothing more than a few bruises against the ribs and chest. Bodhi took the only surviving assassin for interrogation and Luka went on his way, seriously considering dropping the case for the sake of survival.

After being contacted by Bodhi for a meetup, Luka confided in @Loske Matson and invited her to come with him for the meetup. With their work on the Brothel and Phoebe case, he was sure he could convince this growing alliance that she was someone who could be trusted. Besides, she was cute and maybe that might help soften some Bodhi's occasionally prickly nature.

"Just...follow me. Try not to look out of place." He stated to the woman as they approached the bar. It was one of those places that was constructed to glorify a part of Earther History - the Midwest. Like rolling into a swinging door tavern on the edge of the badlands was something appealing. But it just ended up being stained wood, crusty belters, and the smell of sour mushroom beer. Striding in, he gave a nod to the Bartender, who nodded back with a quiet expression of Du Pomang that slithered out from beneath his thick mustache.

Blue eyes moved around as he looked for the usual booth to find @Bodhi Xin.

“Try not to look out of place….” Loske murmured under her breath “Right”. First, she was very obviously an Earther. Her body, although svelte, did not look stretched -- her head might have looked larger than normal, but that was mostly because of her childish cheeks. The biggest tell, with less than a second of glancing, was her blonde hair. Nobody that was a Belter was blonde, their fusions were too exotic to support such a weak genetic.

@Lukas Forgrave had given her a briefing prior to their departure, and as level-headed as she was trying to be in the situation, she was excited.

"Your new kopeng looks out of place here, eh? More dan even yuh."

Bodhi was in his usual booth, but that hadn't been easy to arrange. Bryn had been sat at that table. People didn't normally bother Bryn when he was having a drink on his own. Eventually Bodhi had plucked up the courage and asked very nicely. Mostly that had been because Brak had arrived and regardless of how shifty Bryn looked, Brak looked about the size of a house.

"So...present..." he said with a shrug, sweeping a hand over the gear laid out on the table. "One of many."

Despite what @Loske Matson might have thought, her hair was hardly the biggest tell. It was her bounce. Those born on Earth had a heavy step, put out of place by the low gravity, that made them seem as if they were walking on pillows or feathers when on low g. It made her seem persistently energetic which, as far as Luka could tell, was as accurate a characteristic as any other.

    It was sometimes simply overwhelming.

"I can fit in when I need to." Luka replied with a smirk, though he was bigger than most belters - Brak not included. The similar birth gravity made things easier.

Crossing his arms, he looked at the gear on the table. Looked quite a bit like some gear that went missing a while back from Helix lockers. Gesturing with one hand to indicate the armor, Luka looked towards @Bodhi Xin. "I feel bad. I didn't get you anything."

The detective, stuck in the dark, was waiting for an explanation.

“Woah,” Loske mouthed and leaned forward, hovering her hand above what @Bodhi Xin had presented.

“Where did you get all of this?” The armour’s condition looked.. well, used was an understatement.

Was she missing some of this story? This was undoubtedly the missing Star helix gear, unless someone had gone to great lengths to replicate their stuff.

Bodhi didn't smile at the joke. He offered a nod towards Lukas and shuffled deeper into the booth so the helix agents could sit down. There had been a few asking questions about him over the last weeks. One of them had been dissuaded from sniffing around the area directly. Some private detective who didn't even know exactly who was paying for the information.

"So it all been found, but... well I'm tinking it na go so well for yuh ef yuh show up wid it all." The look in the young belter's eyes suggested he was being deadly serious now.

    Tough crowd.

"Right." Luka took a seat next to the Belter, motioning with a head tilt for Loske to follow suit. Cupping a hand on the table, he picked at a tarnished buckle on the riot gear. And at a ding in the plating that would have protected some cop's shin during the riots.

It was all a headache and rubbing his brow with his free hand, he let out a heavy sigh. He wasn't sure it was good or bad that they found it. A dog was well and good, chasing carts. But once one stopped, the dog might not know the difference between it's snout and it's ass.

"So. I assume you just stumbled upon this?" Of course, that wasn't the case. But @Loske Matson's question hung thick in the air.

Where did you get all of this.

"Well, mi was nuh looking fo dem..." Xin said with a shrug. That was entirely true. In the hectic swirling melee boarding Thoth he hadn't even cared that some of the people shooting at him at Star Helix logos over their shoulders.

"Ting is, mi wondering whether to wanya find dese or not?" Xin asked. He was thinking of Lukas' friends who had ambushed them. All of that made a lot more sense now that he had an idea what was behind the thefts. Specifically which super Corp from earth.

“Maybe we don’t,” Loske replied slowly, cautiously hovering fingers over the riot gear as if touching them would incriminate her on the spot “I wonder if word leaked on some possibly being discovered, their unrightful owners would try to recover these things?”

"Just lucky then, keya?" He uttered as he crossed his arms, eyes glancing from Loske back to the armor. He was already involved and the Lt knew it, but Loske - she was fresh meat in the grinder revolving around this armor.

"Something tells me the unrightful owners aren't too worried about this armor anymore..." Just a hunch. Based on the way it was dinged up. "I'd be more concerned on the unrightful sellers." He shook his head, really wishing the belter hadn't found this. "Maybe you're right. Maybe I didn't want to find these. But here we are..."

The thought didn't cross his mind. The one that would have urged the sensible to get up from the table, leave, and treat this all as a simple academic discovery and nothing more. "Any information from the former unrightful owners..." He posed the question without it really being a question, like he expected Bodhi to continue the line of thought.

Bodhi's demeanour changed as if a switch had been flicked. The easy smile was gone. He looked past both the detectives towards someone else and gave a subtle nod.

"Nuh here," he replied. He raised and arm to point towards the door to the back rooms. Typically closed it was now apparent that the door was heavily reinforced. A belter with a very obvious sidearm stood next to the opening and watched them carefully.

"Would na worry about it being sold on," he added as an afterthought. They'd left most of the dead guards where they had been shot. By now he assumed either the UN or a Protogen flotilla had returned to find the station stripped to the bone.

In her chest, Loske's heart skipped a beat.

"Hold on, are we going ahead with this baiting idea?" Loske itched to turn around, and figured since @Bodhi Xin had made a very apparent gesture, she didn't need to worry about being subtle. She peeked behind her at the door, and the arms that were in front of that door and shrank back down in her seat.

    "What's behind that door?"

    She was missing something here.

"It just ah room," Bodhi added quickly with a shrug.

Luka smiled. It was like one of those documentaries, watching a duck swim across the glass surface of the sort of water bodies that seemed all too alien. And as the camera panned, little webbed feet fluttered about in the water below.

They didn't have that sort of thing here or back on Mars either. And with how Earth was running things, he assumed they would have run of it by now on their little blue planet as well. But there wasn't much to worry about, they captured it in the personification of @Loske Matson - trying to sort out the nuances of this interaction.

Luka smiled as a beer was offered to him, surreptitiously ordered moments ago with a wave of his hand beneath the table. Taking a drink of the sour beer, it was all he could do to not laugh at the nonsense that the belta was peddling. And then the story was over and Luka was disheartened by how shallow that rabbit hole was. "Well..." A hole. A place was somewhere was buried. A place where someone lived.

"Maybe you should lead the way, eh?" He gestured to @Bodhi Xin with his beer. "Wouldn't want to make Brak angry...even though we all know how much you love Helix." Though his attention was, admittedly, more on the man holding the not-so-inconspicuous side piece.

"See...just a room," Bodhi explained. The door was closed ominously behind them. That left Bodhi, Brak and the Helix pair. There were tables and chairs strewn around the room haphazardly, suggesting the area was used as extra bar space. There was one more door at the far side of the room. That too was closed.

Bodhi picked a chair at random, spinning it a out so he could straddle it. His dreadlocks hung forwards as he learned towards the Helix pair conspiritorially.

"I don't know yuh," he said to Loske. The comment came with no further context or explanation. He turned his gaze to Lukas and grinned.

"Yuh wanya know where nine out of ten Helix most wanted went? Hint: where da armour was. Anodda hint: not Ceres."

The room had a dusty smell to it. Like someone had just pulled the tarpaulin cloth from the table and everything was still fluttering about in the air. Luka quietly wondered if the filter systems were going to kick on any time soon, relieve them of the sense that this was the crossroads between an abandoned house and an old unused wet bar.

"You ever think about working for Helix?" Luka's face twisted into the hint the smirk, crossing his arms as he leaned against the wall. Scratching at a scuff on the arm length of his jacket, he lifted his gaze from that to the table. Then to Bodhi.

"Probably too much red tape, huh?" He was treading dangerously into a territory of self-awareness, a sort of incriminating desire to bypass the bureaucracy of Helix that really only violated his own temporary view of ethics. In truth, the red tape was as thick or thin as the officer wanted to be. It was an easy thing to cut, with the vacuum of space so close and at hand. "Not on Ceres...that leaves a lot of room for other places."

He shrugged, finding a seat and pulling up his knee to cross it over the other. Gannymede, Eros, Thoth. "The belt is buzzed with conflict, sasa ke?" He tongued his cheek. "The armor is problematic. If we find it, we have to admit we were looking for it. Unless...it just fell into our laps by chance...that'd be convenient."

"Ah it not da red tape. It wud be knowin' I was on da earther's payroll," Bodhi replied. It seemed to be time to stop messing around and get to the point. He had quite enjoyed the game. He was bright enough to know that he wasn't the brightest spark. He didn't often have the upper hand in knowledge.

"Yuh do na wanya take dis back anywhere. Dere a dark station hidden in da belt. Runnin' silent. Scientists doing shit no one shud be doing. Watching Eros from da inside on video monitors. All guarded by da fuckers who used to run da streets here, dressed up in dat..."

If they had counted they would have discovered that half the armor had not been on Thoth. It hadn't even made it off of Eros. But no one had stopped to look too closely at the dead guards. They had been stripping the data disks, escorting off the scientists and burning hard before the UN arrived.

She blinked at the frank statement from @Bodhi Xin. No..it would seem he did not know her. He was going on the merit of the introduction from @Lukas Forgrave and that seemed to work well enough. What does someone say to that?
She blinked again, glancing fretfully toward the senior detective then back to the lanky Belter. "Do you...want to, Mister Xin?"

Then he and Lukas exchanged some banter, and then it seemed they were reaching the point.

    This was all really weird.

A dark place on the belt. Where scientists were doing something they shouldn't be doing. That sounded mighty familiar.

Scientists seemed to be up to the darnedest things these days, what with the Eros outbreak and the explosion of Phoebe. Her fingertips touched her lips, mostly a shocked reaction but also one that would appear as if she were pensive.

Again..how did he know all this?

"So we have to pretend we don't know anything, while trying to figure out more? That seems delicate."

Bodhi's use of earther, verse inner, seemed intentional. Not that Luka would get offended if he had said something to the effect of that, but the truth of the matter was that Helix was officially bought and paid for by Earther money. Money that, when spent like all the others, worked in the same function. But unofficially, there wasn't a pocket that Helix proper wouldn't be happy to pilfer - a bunch of yapping dogs, giddy over the sound of loose change in someones trousers.

"Hmm." He pondered and then shook his head shallowly, given the impression that he was Schrodingers Martian - he both knew everything and nothing at all, just needed to crack his head open to find out. "We don't know enough to pretend like we don't know anything." For ever answers that Bodhi brought, questions unraveled from the loosely stitched seams of their situation. Suddenly this armor wasn't just stolen away.

It was robbed from the coffers to pay for whatever deeds were being completed by these dark entities. On dark ships or quarantined rocks.

"You got a look at these videos? From Eros?" His mind drifted to Cenaveve, to where ever she might be. Not that he cared, but maybe he did care a bit. "This science that shouldn't be done?" Luka had always assumed being scientist meant a form of theft of conscience. How could someone be a scientist, do all those things that needed to be done, and not be entirely removed from the human race. Maybe they were the next step.
