Diarmuid swore. He looked down at the ground where the glass had broken and the drink had spilt across his front and the floor. His eyes came up to meet those of the Belter glaring at him. The man was at least six inches taller and his heavyset build showed a steroid and aid addiction to help offset the rigours of low gravity.

“That was a mistake” he said in a low voice, almost too quiet for the Belter to hear. “Keting?” the thug demanded. “I said that was a mistake” Diarmuid responded, his voice even. The Belter laughed, “So wa peng! Na tumang, mistake was coming here, sasa ke?”

Diarmuid sighed. A hand landed on his shoulder. Two more Belters had come to close the semi circle around him. They stood back to let him stand. Chivalrous. He turned to face them, one hand dropping lazily to scratch at his back. It closed around the hilt of a knife hidden there.

His other hand scratched at his forehead. “Are we going to do this?”

Seated on the other side of the bar, Chloe watched as several belters circled around a single Inner. From here, she couldn’t quite tell if the man was a Terran or a Martian, but she suspected that it didn’t much matter to the Belters who were trying to pick a fight. Her weight shifted on the stool that she was seated on, narrowing her dark eyes at the events unfolding in front of her. It was a brazen move. She tongued the inside of her cheek in irritation.

Clearly, the belters weren’t paying attention either. Her head canted slightly to the side as she watched the man reach behind his back. From her vantage point, she could tell that the man was reaching for a weapon, though he made it look rather casual.

She raised the ale to her lips and took a quick sip from the amber colored liquid. A few of the Belters at her table glanced over to the escalating fight as well when they noticed that she was watching. Though she was seated in a quiet corner, she had a commanding presence about her.

“Are we going to do this?” She heard the man ask, as though already tired of the situation. It brought an amused smirk to her lips.

Her gaze shifted to the Belter who started the initial confrontation, the tall man growing red in the face with rage. He lashed out towards Diarmuid, shoving his shoulder in an effort to push the man back against the bar. The other Belters that had circled around laughed, jeering at the Inner man.

Chloe set her metal mug down on the table next to her and leaned forward to rest her elbows on her knees, watching intently with an unreadable expression.

Diarmuid saw the shove coming and moved to avoid it but he was too slow. His right hand was already drawing the knife. He fell backwards but his hand came up and slashed in front of him. The Belter howled as he managed to block it with his forearm, blood spurting from the cut.

He changed his aim on the backswing, burying it up to the hilt in the stomach of the Belter on his right. He turned to his left but he was too slow. A punch from the next Belter took him right in the face. He staggered backwards, kicking out blindly to try and block any following move.

He felt his leg connect with something but wasn’t sure what. Hands grabbed him by the shoulders, his vision was blurred. Half blind, he headbutted and was rewarded with a roar of pain. He grabbed the darkened figure in front of him, punching and kicking wildly.

The Terran was holding his own remarkably well, though the fight was quickly escalating out of control. Several of the men would now have to go to the hospital for treatment for their wounds. Idiots. A scowl formed on her features and she pushed herself to her feet.

There was a bag resting on the table next to her drink and she casually reached inside to, producing a small weapon -- a stunner. Just as Diarmuid was kicking out at a Belter in front of him, she approached one of the men that was circling around behind him and raising a shattered bottle as a weapon. She grabbed the man by the forehead and pulled him back towards her, pressing the prongs of her stunner against his side. Just before she pressed the button, she released the hold she had on the man to avoid shocking herself. Having been off balance when she shocked him, he crumpled to the floor in a twitching heap of limbs, drooling out of his open mouth.

    “Oye. That is enough.”
She growled to the rest of the men, dark eyes sweeping over them challengingly.

The pair back at her table casually rose to their feet, the larger of which crossed his arms over his chest and stared the group down with a scowl on his features.

She grabbed the man that Diarmuid had stabbed by his collar and dragged him up onto his feet, shoving him towards the man with the sliced open arm. “Get your idiotic selves to the hospital. If I hear about any more trouble from the lot of you, I’ll find you the nearest airlock.”

An angel came. She wasn’t clad in white or emitting a heavenly glow but she did save him from being brained in the back of the head by a beer bottle. His last punch connected and he gave a victory whoop. The others stepped back and he grinned. Then he realised it wasn’t because of him.

He turned to see a woman as tall as him there, she was warning the rest of them off him. Two more heavies rose from a table and glared down the thugs. He wisely decided to stay quiet as she barked orders at them.

Diarmuid knew he wasn’t out of the woods yet. He was still breathing heavily and his body ached from where he’d been hit. His wary eyes roved, half expected another blow to the head or to be dragged somewhere else to be finished off.

He swayed a little on his feet but his sleeve wiped at the blood coming from his nose. He managed a half grin, eyes still flickering around him. He went for bravado even if the expression on the woman’s face was enough to curdle milk. “I’m afraid you might have to get in line, I wasn’t finished with the first few”.

As the other Belters scurried away from the counter and the woman armed with the stunner, she tucked the weapon into her waistband. Her loose dreadlocks falling over her shoulder as she moved. The expression on her face was clearly unamused at his bravado.

She reached out, grabbing his jaw in a vice-like grip and she stared intently into his eyes. In the dim lighting of the bar, she might have looked something like a shaman. The beads in her hair clinked softly with her every movement, and her jewelry was made from pieces of metal welded together. There was a small ring in her right nostril, tattoos covering her arms all the way up to her shoulders.

“Are you implying that I wish to finish what they started, dove?”
She asked tersely, releasing her hold on his jaw. The man had taken a powerful blow to the head, but he didn’t seem to be concussed. Or at least, not from what she could tell here in the bar.

The two large Belters by the table sat back down and returned to their drinks. “What are you doing in an OPA bar, or did you not realize where you were?” She asked him with a raised brow. Now that the fighting was over, she looked considerably less like she was going to shoot someone in cold blood.

To be grabbed by the jaw is uncomfortable at the best of times. After having several of Io’s finest try to punch your head, it is is distinctly unpleasant. Diarmuid winced as the woman caught him, his hand going to her wrist but she’d it locked on hard. She squeezed just enough to let him know what she could do.

“I certainly hope not” he admitted, “Ma’am” he added quite quickly. Her tone was unimpressed. She’d looked him up and down, demanding to know his presence. “Is that what it is now?” he asked, slowly turning to have a look around, “I might have known if there was a sign up now wouldn’t I?”

He was playing for time but it didn’t seem like she was planning to shoot him just yet. “And if you look at the video, I think you’ll see that they started on me first?”

Chloe clicked her tongue, almost disapprovingly at him. She was tall enough to meet his eye, tall and thin in a fairly average belter build. Her dark eyes swept over his form, taking him in then she looked back to his face. He wasn’t a kid still wet behind the ears, no.. he likely knew exactly what he was doing. Especially if he was able to square off with the pack of belters that had picked the fight.

“I hardly need a security camera to tell you that those men were idiots. I saw what happened.” She shook her head, beads clinking softly from the gesture.

She took a step closer to him, inspecting his injuries intently -- standing in his personal space as she did so. “You took quite a beating, dove. Can you see clearly?"

Diarmuid was slim, he had a wiry build, not overly bulky. The Belter meeting his gaze was...well rough looking. It was hard to tell with them though, it wouldn’t have surprised him to learn she was in her 20s and prematurely aged from the stresses of living out here.

There were jokes about Belters being weak from their low gravity environment. Absolute horseshit. He was going to be aching for the next few days. Hitting bone just hurt. He winced at another twinge of pain.

She stepped closer and he automatically tried to take a half step back, not comfortable with the closeness. The bar prevented him from moving and he was acutely aware of the woman’s presence while she scanned him. “You’re not my bloody mother” he muttered, half embarrassed. Dove?! “I gave as good as I got” didn’t change the fact he’d taken a good few knocks to the face. He grimaced, squeezing his eyes shut. “I can’t” he admitted after a moment.

For the first time, a faint smile played at the corner of Chloe’s mouth as the man protested. He was tenacious, she had to give him that. She took a step back from him, pushing her hair over her shoulder and she sighed. “You gave better than you got, actually. You nearly gutted one those men”

She gestured towards him, nodding once. “If you’re interested, I can take you somewhere to take care of those injuries. If you’d like.” It was an oddly compassionate offer, coming from the rugged Belter.

Even with her gruffness and the lines starting to form on her features, she was still pleasant to look at. She wouldn’t be winning any beauty pageants, but she was hardly a haggard crone. While she waited for him to give a response, she adjusted one of the bangles on her delicate wrist. “It may be wise for you to lay low for awhile, after all.”

“They went for me first” Diarmuid repeated, he wasn’t going to be stuck with any charge if he could help it. The woman had actually smiled for a moment, but it was gone in a flash. She wasn’t bad looking but it was offset by the obvious toughness about her. She looked hard enough that he’d have thought twice about picking a scrap if he had a choice.

“Is this where more of these OPA boys are going to find me?” he asked, one eyebrow raising a bit. He frowned, “It was self defense, station security are going to see that”. His eyes flickered shut and he clutched his head, “How do I know you’re just not going to leave me in an alley somewhere?”

“You don’t.” She said flatly, folding her slender arms over her chest. It was true, she could easily just drag the man to an airlock and be done with him. There were plenty of OPA operatives that would have gladly done just that, all because the man had dared to defend himself.

One hand untucked itself and idly trailed her fingers along the underside of her jawline. “But, the way I see it, you can either come with the woman you just saved your ass or you can stay here and wait for more belters to come find you, with violent intentions.”

“I have a clinic that I can take you to, and no one will cause you any trouble while you’re there.”
She added, a slight smirk at the corner of her mouth as she held his gaze.

The bluntness was refreshing in a way, even if it wasn’t comforting. Diarmuid didn’t look happy as the woman folded her arms and looked at him, like she was considering what she’d have done with him.

He twitched a little as she ran her fingers along his jaw. Normally he’d have moved the hand away but he was beginning to realise quite a few of the others in the bar were willing to step in if he dared lay a hand on her. That and she still had the stunner on her.

The smirk was infuriating but as his old mother had said, beggars could not be choosers. “Fine” he said with ill grace, “I’ll take you up on that if you’d please”.

She could practically feel the man flinch under her touch as she traced his flesh. It was amusing how men always reacted to such a familiar gesture, it almost always put them on edge. The smirk turned from a sardonic expression to a warm smile. Her features almost inviting for a brief moment. “Good to see that your good sense wasn’t beaten out of that thick skull of yours.”

Her voice was low when she spoke to him. The taunting posture had shifted, no longer interested in making the man uncomfortable. She waved over to the two large belters and gave a quick nod of her head towards the exit. One of them grabbed her bag, slinging it over his broad shoulder and started to make his way out of the bar.

“You never told me what a Terran is doing in a belter bar.”
She observed, turning to follow after what could only be her guards. After the first few steps, she paused and looked back to Diarmuid, curious as to if he would actually follow her.

Diarmuid was almost stonewalled by the sudden change to something much warmer and welcoming. His mouth was half open before she bluntly addressed him. She motioned to her followers before starting to move.

Diarmuid grabbed his pack and hurried after her. “Is it illegal for Inners to be in the Belt now? And there I was wondering why I saw UN troops everywhere” there was no love lost between him and them but one couldn’t deny the facts. The woman seemed to have no issue with turning her back on him, not a trace of fear.

He managed a chuckle, “But I am guessing now that a woman like yourself is hardly a loyal and upstanding citizen of the United Nations? Or have I just made a shocking assumption?”

Chloe glanced up at him over her shoulder, an amused smirk on her lips once more. This expression wasn’t condescending or patronizing, he had genuinely entertained her. Her boots thudded softly against the metal floor as they walked through the halls, the crowds parting for the two large Belters that led the way and made it easier for Chloe and Diarmuid to follow.

“Not illegal, no, but many would try to be a bit more careful.”
She murmured, her eyes scanning the faces in the crowd while she spoke. He may not know it, but she was keeping an eye out for any OPA who would take issue with an Inner inflicting harm on any Belter, no matter the reason.

“The UN has given me little reason to be such.” She answered him honestly, not trying to dance around the answer. “Why? Are you a UN man?” She asked, though it sounded like she already had an answer in mind. She doubted that he was such. If he was, he wouldn’t have been alone.

Diarmuid was under no illusions. The moment this woman ordered it, she’d have their escorts King Kong and Godzilla dispose of him. Either a skull battered in with a spanner or else spaced out the airlock. The smirk was a good sign. If amusing her meant he lived a little longer then so be it.

“Well man is an improvement over dove” he admitted before shrugging, “Do I look like one?” it was a dangerous bloody question and he knew he’d have to pick his words damn carefully. Truth be told, Mrs O’Sullivan’s boy had had enough to do with the UN for a lifetime. They had a long arm and he was already due another court-martial for crimes back on Earth.

“I could ask you another though, would you tell me if you were OPA?” he was playing it dangerous now but the knock to the head had him feeling giddy and powerful. And if he was being brought to his execution, he might as well enjoy himself. “If you don’t mind me sayin’...you don’t sound a lot like the other Belte-the other people on Io”

Clearly, the blow to his head had done more damage than she initially thought. Why else would he be trying to antagonize her out in the open like this? That or he was just an idiot naturally. The guards led them down a side corridor and then down a set of stairs. They stopped at a landing and one of them casually nudging a low tile on the wall with his boot. “Do you look like a UN pet? No. But that doesn’t mean your loyalties aren’t with them.”

A panel on the opposite wall slid open. Chloe looked to Diarmuid and gestured towards the newly opened entryway. “That entirely depends on how you wish to know me.” She answered him vaguely.

When he observed her speech pattern, she just grinned back at him with a glint in her dark brown eyes. “It is amazing what a proper education can do for a person.” She said grimly. Most of the Belt was too poor to be afforded the opportunity at an education, it had always been a sore spot for the woman. She hoped to change that in the future.

Ask a stupid question, you get whatever answer you deserve. Diarmuid kept his mouth shut for a moment after that, resolving to think of something smarter to say before he spoke again. They could be planning to skin him alive as a message to all Terrans for all he knew.

His eyes widened at the panel sliding open. His eyes went to Chloe but she just indicated the doorway. He entered it warily, not comfortable with this at all. Her grin had little humour in it though as soon as he mentioned how well she spoke. He winced but didn’t press her on it. The Belter had not been impressed.

His eyes flickered shut and he leaned against the wall for a moment. “Sorry” he said automatically, “Head is bloody killing me”.

A gentle hand came to rest against his shoulder, while she reached over and clicked on the lights. The room she had led him to looked to be something akin to a reception area with two doorways on opposite ends of the back wall. The door on the right was open and showed a small hallway that continued for a short ways, and then turned to the right.

“Of course your head is hurting you.”
She said with a low chuckle, guiding him towards the well lit corridor.

The two guards that had brought them here stepped inside shortly after and closed the door behind them. They each broke off, the smaller one moving to the desk to take a seat, while the large one with the bag followed after Chloe and Diarmuid down the hallway.

The corridor connected to what was clearly a medical clinic. There were six beds total in the room, three lining each wall with small dividers in between each one. At the far end of the room, there was even an auto-doc. Medical equipment and display screens adorned the metal walls.

She gestured for him to take a seat at a medical table as she walked over to the cabinet to grab a few tools and a tray of medication.

“Do you have a name, Terran?”
