It wasn't a glamorous location. They were containers of equipment stolen from Thoth and armed guards with OPA rank pips stuck to their suits at the door. There was not a terminal on sight. Nothing that could have been compromised by a sophisticated rogue corporation.

Only crew captain's and faction leaders that were established within the OPA were present. This was a decision that would affect the entire belt, but this was theirs to make.

"It was from Phoebe," growled Morné. "And it was not human made. We are still decrypting dat kaka but we know dey started recording on Eros before da infection. Protogen put beltalowda lives at risk. No, not at risk. Dey were lab rats for these fookers."

Du Plessis fell silent and crossed his arms over his chest. He was losing his temper again. That dull ache that had barely left him was returning to his temples.

"I say we go public. Announce it to everyone. Show dem all what da belt did. Earther politicians will suddenly have their careers on da line, ja?"

Fred had announced that the vessels that had attacked the Donnager were earth made. The UN had the luxury of denying that, but the voters wouldn't believe that belters had made Eros happen. They had been meticulous with the evidence gathering to the point that any UN enquiry would be handed everything on the plate.

The question was: did anyone else share that view?

"Public?" Alric's voice echoed out, confident, but more than a little mocking. "Why in gods name would we go public?"

The Belter stepped between the small crowd of Captains and Faction Leaders that had gathered within warehouse. A few of them glanced up at him, recognition dawning on their faces. Some scowled, others smiled, and some kept their expressions as blank as they could. Alric ignored them all, either not caring or knowing that engaging with them directly would take away from some of the ambiance of what he was trying to get across.

A quiet murmur erupted behind him as he continued, fellow Belters either agreeing with what he had to say or rumbling about how the 'extremist' was taking things too far once more. "This is a weapon."

    Plain and simple.

"They used it on us. Experimented on us." Disgust carried in his voice. "Why in the fuck would Inners care?"

Protogen, Martians, Terrans, they were all the same in his eyes. "We know who has this. We know where they are. I say we take it."

They had know idea what it was that Protogen had used on Eros, where it had come from or even it's true capabilities, but that didn't matter to Alric. He'd seen the footage, the destruction that it could wreak. That was enough for him. Enough to know that it could be useful for the cause of a Free belt.

"I don't want Inner jobs on the line." He glanced back, looking at the crowd. "I want their lives."

A few stared at him as he continued. "A thousand for every Belter they took!"

"Because every fooker in da system needs to know dat this was done deliberately by Protogen," Du Plessis responded fiercely. There was a pause as he seriously considered using the proto molecule.

They knew it had spread across Eros in hours. The speed at which Eros had gone silent was testament to that.

"We don't know how they got the protomolecule to Eros yet. We have their scientists. They think... They think they could do almost anything with it."

The idea was a draw. The most advanced scientific breakthrough in human history in the hands of the belt.

"If we had some. For all we know it's all on Eros which is slowly floating towards the sun guarded by an entire coalition fleet."

With a sigh, Captain Buttersworth climbed to his feet. He had been sitting on a cargo palette off to the side with his eyes closed, listening to Du Plessis and the other OPA man discuss the merits of this...thing that had been discovered through their taking of Thoth Station. It had been an interesting seires of events, from the battle to take the station, to Rachel nearly killing the leader of the Protogen spooks aboard, to the revelations on what was happening on Eros, what they were studying, and why. "If you are seriously proposing we get a sample of this...thing purely to lob it at Earth, I think you are mistaken."

Murmers of ascent rippled through the group of captains and faction leaders, others shook their heads, some spat on the deck, but Buttersworth's gaze was fixed soley on Du Plessis and the mysterious man who's course of action most likely included genocide.

"Whatever it is was capable of turning Eros into a guided missile. If we sling it at the Earthers, we simply give them free reign to start using it back. It would be a slaughter and by the end of it, only the damn Dusters will be left, if they some how managed to get out of a war using alien technology unscathed. We need to control Eros, then we will finally have a bargaining chip, and a seat at the inners table. With that rock under our control...we could demand anything."

"The nerds we took from the station are already back at work, the ones on the Saxon are already helping to set up a new lab space. They say they can control it...to a degree. They don't seem to think it is a weapon, I do not think we should treat it as such, otherwise we are no better than those who killed Eros."

Alric drummed his fingers in annoyance.

"I don't claim to be better." He never had. To him this was just a war, they looked out for their side, he looked out for his. That was how it needed to be, and nonsense idealism wouldn't get them anywhere beyond niceties. The fact of the matter was that the Inners would never respect them enough to truly give them a place at the table.

    He doubted they ever would.

"Controlling Eros is impossible." He glanced towards Morne. "He said it himself, the entire coalition fleet is surrounding that thing."

Even with his resources it would be impossible to get aboard, not to mention the fact that they didn't even know how to control this stuff. All Alric knew was that they could use it to cause damage, and that was what he was inclined to do. Even if it hadn't been meant as a weapon originally, it could certainly function as one.

"We don't bargain for seat, we don't demand it." He scowled. "We just have to take it."

    By force of course.

"Somehow, it got from Phoebe to Eros. You wouldn't use all of it to start an experiment?" Du Plessis reasoned. The destination of that particular train of thought was clear: there had to be some of it left. "We have the scientists who worked on it now. We don't have to admit that. They're not right in da head. Hard to control. But some of them just want to work on da protomolecule again. That could be for da belt."

Du Plessis took a pause and looked around those gathered. They were so fragmented, but they needed to be together now. Fred had stood up as a leader and the UN had put him down. It might not have been one of their bullets that did it, but it might as well have been. A unified belt scared them.

"We got martians breathing down our necks. We know it was Protogen ships that destroyed the Cant and Donnager. Everyone needs to know that, at least. We got to get that out there."

"Far be it from me to tell you what you can and can't broadcast to the system. Just don't get any more people killed." The man looked tired, he had not spent more than a few days on New Providence for the last few months, even now in one of its docks, surrounded by OPA, he still felt on edge. He needed a rest, a drink too. "For the scientists we picked up, the station staff are setting up a workspace for them now on an old freighter thats been docked with the station for years. No one owns it, no one even knows it exists. But its functional, I vote we get all the nerds back on task and studying this...protomolecule and we learn how to use it for the benefit of the belt. We can keep them here, on the station, or we can undock the old rust bucket and send it out into the black running dark. We monitor it and maintain remote control. The nerds will work happily and we get our results. It's either that or we space them and are as much in the dark as the inners."

"As for Eros...that was an Earth Corp...someone owns that company, someone needs to pay for the genocide that took place on that rock."
