Bohdi tilted his head from side to side, once more shaking his dreadlocks. It didn't make sense to have shipped it back to earth. There were surely far more accessible supplies. Probably would have cost more in fuel than to buy some.

    "Io? Titan? Hmm."

It did make sense to keep some friendly faces on the inside. Especially the way everything was swinging back and forth.

"Yuh still have dose scanners dat can find a person from a sketch?" He asked. He had seen a program on it once. They needed more details than just the face, but if he could get a list of people who left Ceres around the time the riot gear went away they might get a match.

Xin thought he was quite clever. He had also been asking a few more questions around the fringes. He was more interested in who was rounding up gangs and taking them off Ceres. And also in the possibility of them coming back and starting a mighty turf war.

"Io, Titan, Jovian Moons, Tycho, Pallas, Eros..." Luka could go on and on. The Belt was the limit, assuming that whoever had taken the gear was a native of it - he didn't much see sending riot gear armed belters down to Earth to try and start anything. Sounded like a recipe for suicide, armored up rock hoppers heaving for air and struggling to walk.

Actually seemed kind of comical when he envisioned it.

"Yep, Helix hasn't taken my access permissions yet." He was still an upstanding senior detective, made for easy access to certain resources. That and the Captain liked him, despite his recent tendencies to dig holes in ant hills. "Why, you got some faces that could use ID'ing?"

The net was large for broadcasting, sorting out who had taken this gear was going to be a hell of an endeavor. Especially so given that they were going to have to tip toe around big wigs at the Headquarters. He could use any suggestion that Xin might have had.

"Ah dey nuh be causin' shenanigans on Tycho, ah can..."

    "A-hem..."

Bohdi grimaced. He shouldn't have said that. No one was particularly listening in, but the wiry looking man at the bar had decided to interject at the mention of Tycho.

"Might be we got a few who saw men walking and talking dese halls looking for enforcers for a job. Mi figure knowing who dem are..." He gave a shrug. "If yuh can't know where dey went, know where dey came from?"

Tycho was Luka's other home. A place he had been sent, back and forth, when the former Captain of Helix had revealed his understanding of the Martians relationship with the Golden Bough. Since then, the man had been used to strengthen informal relations with his particular talents. That was, until the Captain retired.

"A lot we can do by putting a name to a face..." He scratched at the label of beer bottle, curling at the corners. "Ya know, we do have the general time frame for the theft. I wonder how tough it would be to map out incoming and outgoing traffic for that time period."

He shrugged, mostly to himself. "If someone is hiring up gang members, might be increased traffic in low cost freighters." He had some experience in that neck of the woods, hot bunking with strangers to cut cost in transit. But if gangs were going for a job, he imagined they would be trying to cut down cost as well.

"Narrows it down don't it?" Bodhi agreed. He took a long swig and drained the last of the suds from his bottle.

"I don't give two shots about dis armour," he admitted with a shrug. "But I really do wanna know where dose assholes went, sasa ke?"

Someone inside Helix must have stolen that armour. Someone with Ceres contacts had rounded up entire gangs and turned them into manpower for something. It seemed like a lot of influence out in the belt. The OPA didn't have a great interest in sharing their influence with anyone else. The belt would be for the belt.

"Meet me down docks later. Say, storage room two twenty four. I'll bring everting we know and some face to run?"

As far as Xin concerned it was a good offer. Interests were aligned and they had probably dug into the matter more than Lukas expected.

He nodded as he took another drink. "It's a lot of hassle over some metal and fabric." He set the empty bottle down and stood up. "It's their interest in it that has me interested. Besides..." He looked around, rolling his shoulder. "Crime never pays." Sticking a hand in his pocket, he made eye contact with the bartender before flashing some credits and laying it on the table.

"Docks, storage room 2-24." Pausing for a moment, he left with a subtle nod as he made his way out of the bar and back towards the railway. He had been away from the headquarters for a bit, best to touch base, make his face known for the security feeds. See if Sikes or the LT were around, give them the comfort of his presence, before he found his way back down to the docks.

He'd need the time to set up the profile for the other case. He wasn't convinced that it was related to organized crime but, then again, crime came in many forms. And this just happened to be the more brutal type, the sort that numbed officers with the deluge of a self-contained haven for corruption.

All he would need for the meeting was a terminal and the necessary software, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to do a bit of the leg work in the mean time - checking port filings, seeing the comings and goings. Most of the data would be normalized towards particular time periods so his search rested on finding anything out of the norm.

Being a sketch artist required a lot of training. They had people who could draw nicely and some enforced patience. Brak was a lovely man, but he could brood and grunt and people tended to get things done around him. Details were erased and redrawn over and over.

Eventually they had three sketches. One of them had definitely been important and had herded the gang members around. The other two were Earthers who had stayed quiet and looked threatening.

Maybe they were the kind of people who didn't get registered coming in and out of the docks, but it seemed worth a try.

By luck they arrived at almost the exact same time. Mila had brought her sketches and held the terminal against her chest as she walked alongside Xin. Lukas was coming from the opposite direction down the corridor that ran alongside 2-24.

"Well... We got..." He was interrupted by a loud crack. Xin turned as the broken fragments of Mila's terminal fell to the ground. Sparks and colours and shimmering lights reflected off the shards and they cracked on the floor. Mila looked down dumbfounded at her blood soaked hands. She was dead, but she hadn't realised it yet.

Xin had. The blood splattered across Lukas suggested the shooter was behind him. It didn't matter. He dove for the only cover there was, the door to the warehouse on his right.

They had a specialist for this sort of thing. A thousand different ways to identify someones face. The ear, the iris, the retina, the periocular. A thousand fingerprints across a single face, mixed with voice and odor and heart rhythm and gait. Luka rubbed his eyes as he walked towards the docks, listening to the woman in his head - sitting back at headquarters, geeking out over the idea of identifying someone.

He gave Xin a casual nod, blue eyes shifting to the woman as the moved towards confluence. Then a sound erupted and their was glass on the ground, sparks from a shot, and the woman holding what was left of her life in her hands. The shot was center mass, there was nothing Luka could do but check her requests later - make sure she ended up where she intended to be.

Following behind Xin with a bit less speed, Luka stepped in just as a shot rang out against the ground where his foot was. As he turned, he looked to see the woman drop to her knees, slumping over on to the ground with lifeless eyes. And he withdrew the canon from his rib holster. Checking the plastic rounds, he waited to see if the fire continued.

"Well..." He couldn't kick the joke from his head. "Really wish we had some riot gear right about now." He looked towards Xin, face apologetic and uncertain of what the woman meant. But now wasn't the time to think about that. "Any other way out of this storage room?"

Xin pulled free his sidearm and offered it to Lukas. It was a strange thing to do. No one actually used two pistols at once. Saving a reload wasn't worth losing another set of eyes.

"Nuh odder way out," Bohdi confirmed. "Yuh watch for dem. Don't watch dis."

Bohdi vanished from sight quickly. The sound of him muttering to himself echoed around the cargo room. Then came the low thuck of a catch being undone. He hadn't known Mila well, but that had been a fucking cowardly shot to take.

Another round glanced off the wall a few feet from Lukas. Shots came quicker and there was movement. All from the same direction in the distance but there seemed to be more than one shooter.

Luka took the sidearm with a nod, slipping it into the holster for the time being. No other way out was just about what the detective expected, given how planned out this seemed. Either someone on Xin's side found out about what was going on and didn't like the direction or cooperation with Helix, or Luka was going to have a hard talk with LT in the coming weeks.

The sort of breathless discussion, achieved in the vacuum of space.

As Xin moved out, pilfering about, Luka stepped just to the mouth of the door and listened to the fire. Opening his hand terminal, he swiped through into the security feeds. Trying as he might, it seemed the security camera's were offline. Every window was just static, like they had been unplugged.

Sticking his head out quickly, he brought it back in just as three shots smacked the frame of the storage room.

"Three gunmen..." He muttered quietly in between fire. "All different angles...that way...aim is okay but not great." He pointed the barrel of the gun towards the wall he was leaning against, indicating that they were pinned down in this room for the time being. "Security feeds are down."

There was another crash from around the side of the cargo container. There a metallic click.

"Didn't see dis," Bohdi reiterated as he emerged from behind the cargo pods. He now has a UNMC standard issue rifle in his arms.

The area hadn't been chosen at random. It was one of their watched locations. He hadn't even known it was one in which they stashed weapons. That was blind luck. Hopefully some of his friends would get here before some of Lukas' friends and they could clear out.

Shouldering the rifle he edged sideways to see what angle he could get. No line on the shooters but theit attackers couldn't just pin them. They were going to have to come and finish the job if they wanted to get the deed done.

Luka looked over. Then he looked over again. And smiled subtly as the man made the comment referring to not seeing this. Luka immediately recognized it as a weapon used by the martian military. It was the very same sort of rifle that his father had trained him on from a very early age.

"You use one of those before?" Luka replied as Xin moved in to get a view. Another couple shots rang out as the Martian held the muzzle of his cannon towards the ground.

Xin stayed silent. He stood behind Lukas' shoulder and kept focussed on the corridor ahead. If Lukas was one of the rare Helix officers that followed their procedure for using firearms then Bohdi was going to be a lot quicker to start firing back. It didn't seem likely. Not after the incident with the teeth.

As soon as he saw someone moving down the corridor he decided to fire. It looked like they were armed, but just to be certain he aimed low.

There were three dull thuds followed by the hissing of self propelled rounds accelerating on their own. There was a scream as one of the shooters - Bohdi hoped - went down.

"Mi gut," Bohdi replied. "Yuh wanna wait out de oddas or do someting mad?"

He raised his hand to his closest ear, pressing his ear in as the belter fired off a few rounds. The hallway replied with some hissing and what seemed like a man groaning in pain.

"If that man was really hurt..." Luka lowered his hand as he looked around for some glass or, heaven forbid, a piece of metal. "His friends would be shutting him up to prevent them from finding their location. Unless..." He tongued his cheek. "They're separated." He was convinced, though, that this was a trap to improve their ambition and, coincidentally, their recklessness.

Luka looked back towards the belter. "Give it 30 seconds and then fire that thing full force down the hallway. But..." He leaned forward and flipped the aiming mechanism down. "Don't aim. Just random shots. The gun uses self propelled plastic bullets. Like shrapnel in a hallway when done right."

Bohdi pulled a face that said: you made the suggestion, not me. It was very similar to his you know she just knocked his teeth out right? face. It was a mix of bemusement and respect. As if he was able to think both less and more of the Helix team at exactly the same time.

Thirty seconds felt like a really fucking long time right now. Bohdi was used to the noise and adrenaline of close in shoot outs. Not waiting. Several beads of perspiration rolled down his tattooed arms.

He thumbed a switch and pulled back the trigger. The muzzled drew a figure of eight in the air as he emptied the entire mag. The hissing faded out and was followed by a clatter as he swapped the mag.

    "Got one?"

He covered his ear again at the fire and then dropped it, listening. He waited for a moment and the thump could be heard as gunfire listened. Even through the weezing of a perforated air filter unit, it was easy to pick out a man dying.

"Yeah..." He looked over to Bodhi with a bit of a smirk. "Alright, count of three I'm going to run out and into the direction of their fire. You passed a couple of units on the way here, I'll fire out the locking mechanisms and work my way towards them." He un-holstered the spare pistol that Bodhi had given him and handed it over. "Keep it on you, I have a spare. Besides, faster to switch than reload."

He didn't give the Belter time to argue. "Don't follow right after me. It's the second step that gets the adder. I'll whistle before I put out suppressing fire." He checked his pistol once more, felt the small of his back for his own spare, and listened. "And...three." Stepping out, he moved jagged on the first step, looking around as the two shots placed towards the frame of the storage unit. Spotting slight muzzle flare, he shot off two rounds and sprinted down the corridor. Another couple of rounds smacked against the floor and ricocheted down the corridor.

He returned fire as he ran.

Bodhi was a simple man and Lukas had just issued more instructions in a row than he could actually follow in the circumstances. It briefly occured to him that if he ran the other way then he could probably get clear of the fighting quite quickly.

Follow and run when he whistled. Bohdi reduced it all down to that concept. He waited a few beats then followed after Helix.

He managed to get a bit of a view of one of the shooters that emerged out onto the corridor ahead before firing at him. More professionally dressed than the low rent gangs. Compact little repeater. Paid enforcer most likely. The way he popped out and then had to hide suggested probably not ex-military. Bohdi was more concerned by the muzzle flash from further away.

The rifle was smooth. Barely even felt each crisp three round burst. Reliable earth tech. Words he certainly wouldn't repeat out loud.

Luka had laid eyes on the man as well, opening fire on him and the flash of a barrel in the distance along the rafters. Hearing Bodhi's steps behind him, Luka came to a sliding stop at the closest door to their left. With a few rounds fired at the handle, he kicked it in and pushed inward.

Looking around, the new storage room was filled with various cleaning supplies and chemicals. Fertilizers for the mushroom facilities and growth nutrients as well. The whole room was highly air controlled and smelled crisp, like a freshly opened bottle of weak apple cider vinegar.

Luka looked down, pressing fingers into the whole just at breast height where the shot passed his shirt and deflected against the seat armor concealed beneath. Smoke rose from it and he expected there would be a nasty bruise for a week or so.

"Lucky..." He uttered as he looked towards the belter who would have been following him if he had any sense of self preservation. "You ever make mushroom bombs?" Repurposing the materials used for mushroom growth and maintenance, they could create a sizeable and smokey detonation. Perhaps enough to escape.

Bodhi didn't get to appreciate the crisp air. Nor did he quite catch the question. He let out a gutteral cry and came rumbling through the door. A strong of curses followed as he rolled onto his back and shuffled away from the door.

In his wake was a bloody trail. He continued swearing as he placed the pistol beside himself and pulled up his trouser leg. Blood welled along a short gash just above the back of his ankle. He didn't even stop mumbling swear words as he tore a length of shirt and bound it tightly.

It wasn't the first time and certainly wouldn't be the last time the OPA enforcer got shot. He kept his rifle trained on the door as he got to his feet and limped back from it.

    "Did yuh say bomb?"

Maybe lucky wasn't the right word. Bodhi had been shot and Luka had too. But the detective had the resources to pilfer one of the light swat armors for reconnaissance and infiltration. Didn't do much for kinetic damage but penetration was stopped outright.

Luka gave the man a casual glance from chest to ankle, gauging the blood lose. Deciding that it wasn't enough to warrant stopping, Luka turned towards all the equipment.

"Got into a tough spot when I was younger, over on Pallas..." He looked back. "Watch the door." Fingers grazing over the equipment, he let out a sigh. "My...mentor. He taught me a quick trick, but I had already sort of learned it back in Londres Nova." He pulled back a tarpaulin cloth, flinging dust, before revealing the stock.

"Ammonium nitrate, used to accelerate growth, added with accelerant and an ignition source...jammed in a growth bulb with metal debris. Works as a bomb for a short fashion."

He looked towards Bodhi. "At best its a distraction. At worst, might do some damage. We have enough ingredients here to maybe make three..."
